Workers' Compensation Group Self-Insurance
an important option for California employers
Group Self-Insurance:
An Alternative to Rising Insurance Costs

Obtaining workers' compensation coverage is required of all California employers. In fact, California is ranked as having the most expensive workers' compensation costs in the nation. In the past two years, costs to the average employer have gone up over 50%.

As an alternative to buying workers' compensation "retail" from an insurance company, many employers are exploring two other options: obtaining insurance, but then reinsuring with a "captive" insurance program; or obtaining Group Self-Insurance, where a number of mid-sized employers, with the approval of the California Department of Industrial Relations,  join together to gain the advantage cost savings arising from self-insurance options.
